FRENCH WINES – RHONE

Directly south of Burgundy, the Rhone encompasses a fairly large area.  The Red Wines of this region are generally full-bodied with complex aromatics and mouth-filling flavors.  Match these wines with beef, lamb and game.

CHATEAU DE BEAUCASTEL CHATEAUNEUF-DU-PAPE’05 – “Really dense and locked up now, this is packed with dark fig, currant and blackberry fruit shrouded by layers of tar, hot stone, bittersweet licorice and espresso. The long, dense finish has a great tug of iron buried within it.”……………………199.99

CHATEAU DE BEAUCASTEL CHATEAUNEUF-DU-PAPE’89 – CELLAR AGED SELECTION – “Perhaps the greatest Beaucastel ever produced. Has the class and structure of a great vintage of Mouton-Rothschild. Deep, inky in color, with intense herb, plum, game and spice aromas, this full-bodied wine has an explosion of fruit and an iron backbone. Try the beginning of next century.”……………299.99

DOMAINE DU VIEUX TELEGRAPHE CHATEAU DU NEUF DU PAPE “LA CRAU”’04 – “Pure and silky, with raspberry, cocoa, truffle and mineral notes that glide along the fresh acidity. The long, silky finish lets the fruit and minerality hang nicely, with [i]garrigue[n] in the background. Should blossom in the cellar”………95.99

E. GUIGAL COTES DU RHONE’91 – CELLAR AGED SELECTION – “A lively Rhône, with plenty of plum, cherry and spice flavors. It has good acidity to match the fruit, as well as a pleasant gameyness. Firmly textured and flavorful.”…….69.99

JABOULET ISNARD COTES DU VENTOUX’03 – “Offers lots of game, grilled herb and tobacco flavors with chewy tannins. Fleshy and ripe through the finish, though perhaps a bit too rustic for most folks. A second label for Paul Jaboulet Aîné.”…………….31.99

MARC KREYDENWEISS “COSTIERES de NIMES PERRIERES”’03 – “Big, with a ripe, juicy core of red plum, blackberry and licorice, followed by sweet spice and toast notes. Fresh, fruit-filled finish. Carignane, Syrah and Grenache.”…………40.99
